Hey, did you know about this poor guy? Neither did I. Well, maybe I heard something about it over the years. But there are literally hundreds of anonymous guys, snatched up in the heat of war, who still languish in one US prison or another.

I guess it hits home a bit harder when there's a story to go with a faceless number.

This poor guy has been locked up on Guantanamo for SIX STINKING YEARS! All he did was be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Actually, since he's a cameraman covering the war for Al Jazeera, he was in the right place—but working for the wrong company: one which reports stories without clearing them through the US military.

What can he do? Protest in the only way he can—a hunger strike. So he's nearly into his eleventh month of a hunger strike. Think about that.

If he was a convicted murderer, he might be out on parole by now. But since he's most likely done nothing wrong except doing his job as a journalist, he's swallowed up by the black hole of the endless"War On Terror."

Most (like very nearly all) of those held as "enemy combatants," when their cases are finally investigated, are found to be guilty of NOTHING.

Can we return to being a legitimate free law abiding country now? Or soon? Or in the foreseeable future...?

Oh that's right. As soon as this war is over. The war against EVIL. But wait. That war NEVER ENDS....

Sami Al Haj

Sami Al-Hajj, prisoner 345 at the United States Detainment Centre in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, has been on hunger strike since 7th January, 2007.

Sami was arrested in Pakistan in December 2001 whilst travelling with a legitimate visa to work in Afghanistan as a cameraman for Al Jazeera. But he is being held as an ‘enemy combatant’.

prisoner345.net is dedicated to empowering Sami’s family, friends and colleagues, together with all supporters of human rights around the world, in the campaign to set him free.
